Equipment & Clay

Aside from a creative, tight knit space to work from, the Clay Studio also has all the necessary tools and equipment for its users. With six wheels, a kiln, a large slab roller and extruded, as well as glazes and under glazes for your use.  If you are interested in learning more about the exciting world of pottery, sign up for one of our introductory courses or an upcoming Studio Safety Orientation session.

OPEN STUDIOS & RENTALS

Open Studio sessions are available to those who have previously taken a class, are currently enrolled or have completed a Studio Safety Orientation session.

Open Studio Hours:

Mondays …….1:00–4:00 pm
Tuesdays ……6:30–8:30 pm (Open Studio Drop in Demo nights, see below)
Wednesdays .. 6:30 – 9:30 pm.
Thursdays ……1:00 — 400 pm
Fridays ………..6:30 – 9:30 pm

OPEN STUDIO ORIENTATION & SAFETY

Sessions are 1hr, 7:00-8:00pm and all new Open Studio users are required to attend one session. Demonstrations of how to use common studio equipment will be given as well as information on studio policy, programs and safety. Sessions are $20 per person and require online registration.  After completing a course or the orientation session, open studio rates are listed below.

  • 10 Hour Punch Card $50 (includes 2 free hours)
  • 20 Hour Punch Card $100 (includes 4 free hours)

Description of Clays

Sio2 Speciality Black Stoneware Clay

With 40% impalpable grog (up to 80 Mesh). Formulated for artistic ceramics, it is ideal for wheel-throwing and modeling smooth pieces with fine details. Behaves well during drying and firing. Suitable for tableware (food-safe), according to ISO 6486:1999. Firing range: Cone 5-6 (2205º-2269ºF), Biscuit: Cone 06 (1855ºF), drying shrinkage: 7.0%, firing shrinkage at Cone 6: 7.1%.  Sold per 6 kg amounts.

Laguna Frost Cone 6 Porcelain

This is an exceptional porcelain throwing body for cone 5-6. Fired a bright white at cone 6 and can be made translucent when thrown/built thinly. The average shrinkage is 11% plus or minus 2%. Sold per 5.5 kg amounts.

MCS Cone 6 Porcelain

This cone 6 porcelain is a smooth, robust, plastic body which fires white. Although it is used mainly as a throwing body it can be used to hand build small-to-medium-sized pieces. Wet-to-dry shrinkage: 7.0% total shrinkage at cone 6: 14.5%  Bisque fire to Cone 06 and Glaze fire to Cone 5-6. Sold in 5 kg amounts.

Mid Smooth Cone 6 Stoneware

This body is a very smooth, plastic clay with no grog or coarse fireclay in the formula. It fires to an off-cream colour at Cone 6 oxidation. Mid Smooth Stone is designed as a throwing clay but it is also used for hand-building when a smooth clean surface is required. Glazes are not muted at all. This is a good clay body ranging between stoneware and porcelain. Wet-to-dry shrinkage: 7.5%, Total shrinkage at Cone 6: 14.5%.  Sold in 5 kg amounts.

Mid Red Cone 6 Stoneware

This is a fairly smooth body with just 5% of 35 mesh grog for some strength during building, throwing, drying and firing. Mid Red is a very responsive throwing and building clay which fires to a strong red colour. Wet-to-dry shrinkage: 7.0%, Total shrinkage at Cone 6: 15.5%.  Sold in 5 kg amounts.
