October 2019 Gallery Shows
On Friday, October 11th, 2019, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM we invite you to the opening reception for three exhibitions of contemporary craft. Lisa Downey’s solo exhibition Mom Made Us is a journey of memories. Follow the artist’s timeline of her mother’s creations that she made for her children up to her untimely death – her mother’s legacy continues within Lisa’s work as an emerging textile artist. In the Main Gallery, the curated group exhibition Crafted Beasts explores the relationship of Folklore and Contemporary Craft. In the CRAFT Lab Gallery, curator Emily Critch bring together the nuances of sewing specific to Newfoundland and Labrador, and demonstrate how these Indigenous women exercise their political and creative sovereignties by caring for their histories and kinships through radical acts of stitching in mitsujuk | kussikuashu | kpitni’sewet | they sew .
The Opening Reception takes place at the Craft Council Gallery, 275 Duckworth Street. Refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome.
