The Craft Council of Newfoundland & Labrador is proud to announce that Sharon LeRiche, former Gallery Director, is the recipient of the 2019 Craft Alliance’s Atlantic Canada Craft Awards for Excellence for Industry Leader/Supporter.
The Atlantic Canada Craft Awards for Excellence are the Craft Alliance’s principal form of recognition for leadership and excellence in a professional craftsperson’s life and for those who are strong supporters of the industry. These awards are given annually at a gala event in conjunction with the Craft East Buyers’ Expo.
Sharon has worked as Gallery Director for the Craft Council for over 25 years, and has recently retired as of August 2018. In the time that Sharon has been Gallery Director, the Craft Council Gallery has grown from an emerging gallery, with a tentative presence in the community, to an established facility that is recognized province-wide for its excellence in exhibition quality and support to exhibitors.
A weaver herself, Sharon is aware of the challenges facing the professional maker of fine craft, and especially those challenges associated with showing and selling gallery calibre works. Her vision for the Gallery, and the work that the Gallery can do on behalf of the artists who show there, has brought fine craft a heightened level of respect and credibility in the fine arts community of this province.
In her quiet, patient, and devoted way, Sharon has left an indelible mark on the Craft Industry in Newfoundland & Labrador. Her understanding of an individual’s needs and genuine encouragement have helped many craftspeople in our province take the leap to exhibiting fine craft.
